Beach is beach and work is work. Right?
Admittedly, sometimes even we feel stuck here. And we long for a change of scenery. Or at least better weather. Different people. Pizza. Or a cold beer on the beach. Inspiration!
For about six years now, we’ve been enabling work from different locations. Whether it’s the home office or a dacha at the end of the world—it honestly doesn’t matter much to us.
And yet: Without a few clear rules and insights, even the best workation won’t work. Our colleagues Simon, Linda, Luise, Olli, Thomas, and André share what those are.
Luise: “A fixed, undisturbed workspace with storage space is super important to me—it sounds strange, but that’s just how it is. Taking my laptop to the beach? That throws me off. I’d rather close my laptop after work and quickly put my feet in the sand.”
Thomas: “Team communication—transparency is everything. I clearly say in advance when I’m reachable and when not, and via which channels. Especially abroad, outside Europe, for example in Asia, these can differ quite a bit from the usual office standards. And when it comes to time differences, compromises have to be found.”
Linda: “Before the workation, I already plan a clear rhythm. For me, that usually means: focused work during the day, then going out in the evening to get inspired—sea, mountains, new impressions. Without fixed structures, a workation quickly becomes stress instead of new freedom.”
André: “I like to tack a vacation onto my workation—or vice versa. That way, I enjoy the benefits of the new beautiful place for longer and don’t feel like I’m missing out, even when I’m working.”
Simon: “The right location is important. Good infrastructure beats palm trees. I pay attention to reliable Wi-Fi, a quiet environment, and not too many distractions, like noise or tourist crowds.”
Olli: “Realistic expectations, whether there are palm trees outside or not—it’s simply working from another place. My takeaway after a month in Lisbon: I should have taken more vacation days. Conclusion: It was so great that I did it again right away.”
