Hamburg-based Ibeo Automotive Systems was one of the pioneers of LIDAR technology: laser scanners that measure distances and speeds on the road and teach vehicles to perceive their surroundings. From 2016 to 2022 we supported Ibeo in the trade and consumer press. In 2023 the US company MicroVision took over the business.
The task was to explain a highly complex sensor technology so that automotive, business and specialist media could all make sense of it. We placed expert articles and answered the questions that have accompanied the debate on autonomous driving from the start: how safe is the technology, what can it already do, and when will it reach the road?
The debate has moved on and shifted. Autonomous driving is arriving first where it pays off: in logistics, on fixed routes between distribution centres and in depots. Sensor makers, software providers and fleet operators face the same task Ibeo did back then. They have to build trust in a technology you cannot see.
